Instructions for Search:
  1. Select countries from the country list and add them to the search list. Select all countries or up to ten individual countries for your search.
  2. Select whether you wish to search for alliances including any of the listed countries or if you wish to limit your search only to alliances including all of the listed countries.
  3. Select a date range or check "include all dates". You will receive information on any alliances that were in effect for any part of the date range you select. Alliances that list no termination dates (recorded with year ----) were still in effect as of December 31, 2003.
  4. Select any of three filters if you wish. Checking (B) limits your search to bilateral alliances. Checking (W) limits your search to alliances formed when at least one alliance member was already involved in an international war. Checking (M) limits your search to alliances that specifically require the members to assist one another militarily in the event of conflict and eliminates alliances that obligate states only to maintain neutrality or provide consultation.
  5. Click search. You will receive a list of the alliances matching your search criteria. If you click on the 4 digit ID number for a particular alliance, you will open the ATOP codesheet for that alliance. If you receive a message that no alliances match your search criteria, you may wish to broaden your search (by selecting a wider date range or more countries, unchecking the filters, or selecting alliances including any of your selected countries rather than all).
